Most of our VPS services are unmanaged by default. This means you have full root access and complete control over the software inside your server, while we take care of the hardware, network, Ceph storage, and DDoS protection. For customers who would rather have us look after their servers, we offer managed hosting on request. This article explains what we maintain, what stays your responsibility, how we price it, and how billing works.

What is managed hosting?

With managed hosting, we take over the day-to-day care of your server and the software stack your application needs to run, for example the operating system, Nginx, PHP, MySQL, and Redis. We look after the platform; your application, its code, and its data remain yours. We offer managed hosting on request and depending on the nature of each setup, since it requires closer collaboration and familiarity with your environment.

What we maintain and what stays yours

We keep the environment your application runs on secure, updated, and available. The application itself, including its code, data, and software such as Magento, WordPress, or Laravel and their plugins and extensions, remains your responsibility, since only you can test that changes work with your code.

Two points that commonly come up:

  • We apply routine updates and security patches to the PHP runtime as part of the service. Moving to a major new version (for example PHP 8.3 to 8.4) can change how your application behaves, so we treat that as separate project work.
  • If a necessary platform security update reveals an incompatibility in your application, we will of course let you know. Diagnosing and resolving it on the application side is billable project work, not included maintenance, because the fix lives in your code.

If you would like us to carry out application-level work, we can do so as a separate project at our hourly rate, but responsibility for the result remains with you.

Pricing

Our engineering rate is €50 per hour. All one-off and project work is billed at this rate, with an estimate provided in advance and work starting only after your approval.

One-off setup (onboarding) is billed once, based on an estimate of hours at our engineering rate. Indicative ranges:

The monthly management fee
is fixed and covers the platform maintenance described below:

Each additional managed server is +€39 per month. Project work beyond the included scope is billed separately at the hourly rate, after an approved estimate.

Relationship to unmanaged plans and support

Managed hosting is an add-on on top of our standard model. For unmanaged plans, our free basic support and the provisions of our Terms of Service remain in effect, including the flat service fee for more extensive work.

Important

  • Managed hosting does not change the nature of our availability target. The same 99.9% objective (SLO) on a best-effort basis applies, as described in our SLO article.
  • Even with managed hosting, we recommend that you keep your own independent off-site backups of important data. This is standard practice for any production workload.
